Do you take password precautions? You should be especially with your twitter–if your friends are complaining that you’re sending “weird” dm’s (direct messages) from twitter; you need to change your passwords right now.
MSNBC recently published a post which states “Some users of Twitter, the microblogging site, may be the victim of a new phishing and account hijacking attempt on Twitter that specifically affects private messages — called “Direct Messages” or DMs — sent between users.”
What sort of precautions can you take?
1. Never give out your password; while that may sound obvious–even to your friends–they may write it down and leave it on their desk for others to see.
2. Change your password frequently
3. Never use the same password for every social site you use
5. Keep a password protected file for your usernames and passwords; so you don’t have to use the same one over and over again
6. Never, ever click on a link in your email; unless you know and trust the source completely. But remember that too can be dangerous. I have received emails that look perfectly legit from paypal, my bank etc. saying your account has been compromised. I NEVER click on the link provided no matter how tempted I am. I always go directly to the website login the normal way and then check for any messages that I may have in the backoffice of my site.
That’s it for now. I’m off to change my twitter password; which means I have to change my twollo and my socialoomph and my ping. Hmm what a pain; but I’d rather be safe than sorry.
